Utah colleges continue their dark record when it comes to rape and sexual assault. Utah’s top 11 universities, including the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, Utah State University and others have had over 120 accounts of rape and 56 accounts of sexual assault reported since 2013. Utah State University Eastern has had four accounts of sexual assault since 2015 according to the Clery Report.

Two females who may have weapons set off Utah State University Eastern’s Code Blue Emergency System at 5:08 P.M on Sept. 12. Upon the Code Blue going out, a Student Affairs employee contacted Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Jason Marshall, who was teaching a marksmanship class. He immediately left class and ran to the Jennifer Leavitt Student Center. In a police report by USU Eastern Police Officer Tana Christensen, she wrote: “There was a call that came out saying a man in Pioneer Park had a weapon in his waistband.

Utah State University Easter’s students added 160 volunteer hours to the United Way’s Day of Caring on Sept. 9. According to Sun Center Director, Terry Johnson, 40-student volunteers from Eastern spent Day of Caring helping at the Bryner Pioneer Museum, Boys and Girls Club of Carbon County, The Carbon County Community Garden and yard work at various residences. Eastern’s athletic department sent students from the men and women’s basketball teams, and men and women’s soccer teams to help throughout the day.

When Dee Miller was announced staff member of the year by Utah State University Eastern’s Chancellor Joe Peterson in the welcome back breakfast, he could not hide the surprise in his face. “I was there for the breakfast”, he said. The award is given to one outstanding staff member at USUE yearly. It is voted among all staff, what proves that whomever earns it, is someone that the entire Aggie/Eagle community pledges to be an amazing professional.

Gypsie Everett seems right at home in her new position at Utah State University Eastern as the director of student life, leadership and diversity; a position she is excited to help USUE students for years to come. On July 1, Everett began her tenure, a position previously held by Evette Allen, Ph.D, who held the position three years.

Four seems to the criminal justice department’s lucky number as this year marks the fourth year of USUE’s Police Academy and the introduction of a new four year degree. Utah State University Eastern has been a long-standing supporter of the criminal justice field with the variety of criminal justice classes and activities, as well as the USUE Police Academy.

Since 2010, when the College of Eastern Utah merged with the Utah State University, there has been an unspoken understanding amongst the administrations at both colleges that the Price campus would one day adapt to the “Aggie” nickname. USU Eastern Chancellor, Joe Peterson, explained the proposal. “So, the whole thing is pretty complicated. It’s a process, something that grows,” he said.

The former head of the USU Eastern Dance Department was found dead in Helper on July 27. Melissa Louise Anast, 38, loved teaching dance and choreographing theater shows for the college. In 2012, she won the Repertory Dance Theaters Iron Choreographer along with her co-choreographer. Recently she choreographed shows for The Rio Theater in Helper, Utah.

A USU Eastern automotive graduate was named one of the top-auto students in the state after he competed in the Post-Secondary Automotive Service Technician competition in Utah Skills USA Leadership Conference recently.
