Two burglaries outside of AJ hall

On the weekend of April 13- 14, two-vehicle burglaries took place on the east side of Aaron Jones Residential Hall.

The first theft was observed by the owner of the vehicle who watched as an individual in a hoodie got into her vehicle and stole a pair of Nike running shoes. The vehicle owner thought she recognized the burglar but the suspect was able to prove otherwise.

The second theft occurred on the same side of AJ. This burglar took only a Hi-Point 9-millimeter handgun. Campus security expressed hope that this firearm might show up in the National Crime Information Center database if ever the serial number is run.

Both vehicles were unlocked at the time of the thefts and both were outside of the view of surveillance cameras.

Officer James Prettyman, head of the campus police, warns, “Larcenies are a crime of opportunity. If you give somebody the opportunity to take something they are probably going to.”

Prettyman suggests that residential doors remain closed and locked, that vehicles be kept locked and that nonessential valuables be left home. Campus security also offers safer storage for valuables and firearms to residents.
