Life is precious, do not destroy it

It was from the wise mouth of Mother Teresa of Calcutta who said, "Being unwanted, unloved, uncared for, forgotten by everybody, I think is a much greater hunger, a much greater poverty than the person who has nothing to eat."

It seems to me that as time goes on, peoples' priorities and ideals are changing. Things are going backwards. People used to know the meaning of hard work, the value of loved ones and the shortness of life and how quickly things can change or be taken from them. It's not this way anymore. There is so much focus and importance put on personal gain, money and prestige.

"Everybody today seems to be in such a terrible rush, anxious for greater developments and greater riches and so on, so that children have very little time for their parents. Parents have very little time for each other, and in the home begins the disruption of peace of the world." The idea of families is getting swept under the rug as they are not even considered necessary anymore. The thought of having children is looked down on.

What is our world coming to? Since when did we all start thinking that only ourselves were important and stop worrying about those around us? It is a sad thought to think that women want only to further themselves in their careers rather than raise children. It is sad to think that men don't want to tie themselves down with marriage and commitment.

It is time that we start to live our lives not only for ourselves, but for those around us and those that we love. It is time to take off the rose colored glasses and see that the world isn't perfect, not even close. It isn't even right.

As individuals we are going to have to work really hard to make family relationships work, to strive to show our loved ones that we really do care and to actually do something for someone even when it is bettering our own situation. Because who knows, tomorrow they may be gone and you will have missed your last opportunity to serve, to be there for a friend or to say 'I love you' to someone. "I have found the paradox, that if you love until it hurts, there can be no more hurt, only more love." Time is too short to waste it on ourselves.

I implore you to make an effort to mend broken friendships, tell the ones you love that you love them because sometimes they just need to hear it, and to make the most of everyday. We don't know what tomorrow is going to bring, or take. Don't risk it!

Mother Teresa said something else that really hits home. "Life is an opportunity, benefit from it. Life is beauty, admire it. Life is bliss, taste it. Life is a dream, realize it. Life is a challenge, meet it. Life is a duty, complete it. Life is a game, play it. Life is a promise, fulfill it. Life is sorrow, overcome it. Life is a song, sing it. Life is a struggle, accept it. Life is a tragedy, confront it. Life is an adventure, dare it. Life is luck, make it. Life is too precious, do not destroy it. Life is life, fight for it."

The past is history, tomorrow is a mystery and today is a gift. That is why it is called the 'present.'
